Shaktis – Amrita Sher-Gil – Inspiring South Asian Women in History – Kokeshi Art Doll
Shaktis is a collection of inspiring and powerful women of South Asian origin whose stories deserve to be told.
“I can only paint in India. Europe belongs to Picasso, Matisse, Braque. India belongs only to me,” wrote Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil to a friend while touring south India in the late 1930s. Amrita fell in love with India and she returned, trained in Paris, to depict Indian women in ways were never seen before: their stoicism and despair laid bare in on canvas. She produced a prolific body of work in a short, yet extraordinary, life. A contemporary of Frida Kahlo, to whom she is often compared, Amrita carved out a niche for women artists in modern India. It is only recently that we have begun to understand the gift she gave India and the world.
