Shaktis – Kalpana Chawla – Inspiring South Asian Women in History – Kokeshi Art Doll

Shaktis is a collection of inspiring and powerful women of South Asian origin whose stories deserve to be told.

Kalpana Chawla is a powerful inspiration for South Asian women in science. An engineer from Punjab, she went on to earn her PhD from the University of Colorado in aerospace engineering and joined NASA as a researcher. In 1995, she joined the elite NASA Astronaut Corps and in 1997, she became the first woman of Indian origin in space. Her tragic death alongside her crew mates aboard Columbia in 2003 shocked the world. She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Space Flight Medal, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. She showed future generations of South Asian women that even the sky is no limit for our dreams.
