Shaktis – Meerabai – Inspiring South Asian Women in History – Kokeshi Art Doll
Shaktis is a collection of inspiring and powerful women of South Asian origin whose stories deserve to be told.
The incomparable Bhakti poet Mirabai is revered as a woman who refused to play by the rules, choosing instead devote her life to the worship of Lord Krishna. Married into a royal Rajput family in the 16th century, she refused to commit sati, enduring persecution by her in-laws till she broke free to become a wandering ascetic and bard. She was a free spirit, embracing kindred devotees of all castes and creeds to further her unstinting outpouring of love for her Krishna. It is believed that she finally merged into an idol of her Lord at Dwarka in Gujarat.
