Shaktis – Savitribai Phule & Fatima Sheikh – Inspiring South Asian Women in History – Kokeshi Art Dolls

$155.00

Shaktis is a collection of inspiring and powerful women of South Asian origin whose stories deserve to be told.

Author, teacher, social reformer, and one of the first modern feminists, Savitribai Phule worked with her progressive husband Jyotirao Phule, to establish the first school for girls in 1848. Fighting both patriarchy and caste oppression, they established two educational trusts that oversaw 18 schools, catering to hundreds of pupils. Their teaching methods form the basis of modern educational practices in India.
Working side-by-side was Savitribai’s friend and fellow teacher, Fatima Sheikh. These two badass ladies were pelted with stones as they went from door to door to recruit students. Their story of friendship and mutual respect is a powerful example of what can be achieved when women work together.
